Gmail for Android gets a new account switching UI

Google is rolling out a new update to the Gmail app for Android. This update offers a revamped user interface for switching accounts.

Up until now, in the Gmail app for Android, when you clicked on the profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen to switch accounts, it used to show an overlay that used to take about one-third of the screen. While the app displayed this overlay, in the background, it also showed you the screen you were previously interacting with. Well, that has now entirely changed.

According to 9To5Google, in version 2024.11.24.x of the Gmail app for Android, when you click on the profile icon, the app now takes you to a full-screen menu, with the background showing a solid color instead of displaying what you were interacting with previously. You can take a look at the old and the new UI in the images below (Left Image = Old UI; Right Image = New UI).

At the top, you will be able to see your profile picture. Below that, you have the ‘Manage your Google Account’ button as before. Then you have the ‘Switch account’ collapsable list, showing you all the accounts added to the device, as well as options to add another account and manage accounts on the device. Lastly, you have a bar showing you the Google cloud storage that you have used. There’s a close button at the top-right corner of the screen to exit the menu and resume what you were doing previously.

Gmail for Android now looks more consistent with the web client

While the new design looks cleaner and more organized, some people might argue that changing accounts doesn’t require a full-screen panel. It is worth pointing out that the new design is similar to the one that the web version of the email client offers. So, now you get better cross-platform consistency in terms of design. Google is expected to expand this change to its other apps for Android, including Drive, Keep, and so on. To get more such interesting news, follow our channel on Telegram or WhatsApp.
