Exclusive: Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover display gets optimized Google apps

The larger 3.4-inch cover display will be one of the biggest improvements that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will introduce when it's launched on July 27. Despite its unique, folder-like shape, the cover display will be much more usable than any of the existing Galaxy Z Flip models.

It's not just Samsung apps that have been adapted for the new flip phone's cover display. We hear that some of Google's apps have also been optimized. For example, there's a unique Google Maps interface for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, making it possible for you to look up directions without needing to unfold the device.

Google optimizes its apps for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover display

We have already told you about the many new capabilities of the Galaxy Z Flip 5's cover display last month. Samsung Keyboard has been adapted for it, which means that you'll be able to type text messages and use voice-to-text when the device is folded. You'll also be able to accomplish many other things, such as browsing the web and checking your calendar. Expect most, if not all, of Samsung's apps to be optimized for the cover display.

That's just half the fun, though. We hear that Samsung has also collaborated with Google to optimize the latter's apps for its upcoming foldable phone. These includes the likes of Google Maps, Messages, and YouTube. You'll be able to text, watch videos, and look up directions without having to unfold the device. Since these are some of the most common tasks that we do with our phones, it's going to make our lives much easier.

It's not surprising that Google has made its apps ready for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover display. The company has closely collaborated with Samsung to optimize the Android OS and apps for the Galaxy foldable phones ever since the first one came out. Google Meet's support for Flex Mode is one such example.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover display is far from offering the full Android OS experience that you can get from the Galaxy Z Fold 5 cover display. It's certainly not big enough to support a full-fledged home screen and app drawer. However, it's good to see that Samsung has worked with its partners to provide users with the next best thing. Hopefully, we'll see a lot more developers making similar optimizations to their apps for the upcoming foldable phone.
