Galaxy AI wallpapers are nice, but they have one big issue

Generative wallpapers are part of the fun side of the Galaxy AI experience on flagship Galaxy smartphones and tablets. You can use the power of artificial intelligence to create unique wallpapers based on a few customizable keywords, and you can repeat the process as much as you want till you get a result that is to your liking.Summarize in one-click with Galaxy AI

I have used Galaxy AI wallpapers a fair bit since Samsung introduced the feature with the Galaxy S24 lineup. It's not something I expected to do, as I'm not someone who cares about the wallpaper on their phone, yet it's my second most used Galaxy AI feature (website summarization is at first position).

If it isn't clear already, I like this feature. However, there's one thing that stops me from loving it: the resolution of the generated wallpapers. If you have a Galaxy device that supports Galaxy AI wallpapers, you have probably noticed that the wallpapers are not all that sharp.

Galaxy AI wallpapers are not sharp enough

Samsung doesn't allow you to save Galaxy AI wallpapers as images on your device or view them in the Gallery app, so it's unclear what resolution these images are. What's clear is that the resolution isn't high enough.

Wallpapers without any clearly defined lines or shapes look fine, but everything else is underwhelming. Heck, the ‘AI-generated content' watermark that's laid on top of these wallpapers is sharper than whatever the AI actually creates. You can see some examples in the screenshots below.

Unfortunately, this isn't something that Samsung can fix. Galaxy AI wallpapers use Android 14's built-in generative wallpaper tool — and Google's AI algorithms. Everything from the different categories and themes to the customizable keywords are the same on Galaxy and Google's Pixel devices.

The improvements will have to come from Google, and that will require a new version of Android. Unfortunately, Android 15 (One UI 7) doesn't change anything, and we will have to wait and see if any improvements will arrive with Android 16.

For now, for sharp and high-quality wallpapers, you can use apps like Backdrops and Walli available on the Play Store. These apps are updated regularly with fantastic new wallpapers, including wallpapers built specifically to take advantage of AMOLED displays, from various artists. They also allow you to save the wallpapers to your device.
