In 2022, Samsung became the first Android manufacturer to promise four years of Android updates to flagship smartphones and even some mid-range devices. Just two years later, Samsung bumped the guarantee up to seven years of updates to match what Google began promising for Pixel devices back in 2023.
All Galaxy flagships starting with the Galaxy S24 series are eligible for Android, One UI, and security updates for seven years. It's no different for the Galaxy S25 lineup, which Samsung unveiled on January 22 in San Jose, California.
Galaxy S25 series will get Android updates for seven years
The Galaxy S25 series will support seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. Out of the box, you get Android 15 with One UI 7.0 on top, so by the end of the support period, the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra will be running Android 22. As for security updates, expect these phones to get one monthly for at least the first four years.
With more and more people upgrading their phones less frequently, Samsung's policy of seven years of updates is very attractive. Such an update policy enhances the value proposition of flagship devices, especially since top-of-the-line smartphones aren't getting any cheaper.
It's also great for those who hand down their existing device to a family member when upgrading to a newer model, as they can rest assured that the family member will not find themselves using outdated software.
The only question is whether these devices will offer usable performance so far down the line. Performance optimization on flagship Galaxy phones has never been better so we aren't too worried, but only time will tell how well they will hold up in their final few years.
